Wine With Cake – Wine Not

Ahhh – the holidays…they are just around the corner!  You can likely imagine the holiday season is a very busy time for the JBT Chix. From mid-November through the end of the year, you can find us baking away in our kitchens, enjoying the sweet aroma of rum and whiskey cakes and packaging them in our signature pink box, topped with that elegant black bow. Hundreds of cakes, all going to our customers to give as holiday gifts. We won’t deny, it can get a bit hectic, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Tracey’s Wine Not Christmas Tree

So, when we get a few precious moments of quiet time, one of our favorite things to do is sit down with a glass of wine, a slice of our cake and enjoy the twinkling lights of our Christmas trees.

Wine with cake? Heck yeah, we think they pair very nicely together.  What wine do we pair with our cakes? – Well, that’s an excellent question.

Now, by no means do we claim to be anywhere close to a sommelier, but there are a few wine varieties we think pair nicely with our cakes.

Let’s start on the lighter side of things.  Our Original Rum cake (by far, our most popular), easily pairs well with a crisp, cold Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc.  These white wines often carry a fresh citrus flavor that won’t take away from the sweet smooth savory taste of our Original Rum cake.  The rum cake is enough to have your mouth watering and gentle sips of a soft Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc will make for a delicious finish.

Now, if you’re a fan of our Salted Caramel Whiskey cake, we’d recommend a slightly sweeter, white wine, like a Viognier or Chardonnay. The sweetness of this wine paired with the salted caramel flavor makes a beautiful, creamy balance of flavors.

For those chocolate lovers out there, try our Chocolate Rum cake with a lovely Pinot Noir to bring out a subtle, smooth chocolaty finish. Pinot Noir often has complex flavors that may include cherry, raspberry or sometimes even hints of earthy spices but which allows the simpleness of our Chocolate Rum cake to still be the shining star in this pairing.

Espresso cake with Port Wine or Black Cherry Whiskey with Cabernet Sauvignon.

For our coffee cravers, try our Espresso Rum cake with a Port wine. While espresso is considered a strong, sometimes bitter hot beverage, when you pair it with the bold sweetness of a Port wine, the two balance each other out quite nicely.

And finally, for those who enjoy something a little more unique, try our Black Cherry Whiskey cake paired with a good full bodied Cabernet Sauvignon. This cake and wine combination will deliver a strong explosion of flavors, inviting you to relish every morsel you you nibble.

For those of you who are fans of our cake, but would prefer a non alcoholic pairing, that’s no problem either. A cold glass of refreshing milk or steaming cup of coffee makes excellent choices to pair with any of our cake flavors!

Let us know in the comments below what beverage you like to pair with our cakes. Cheers ya’ll!
